Crazy Chameleons Slot Game Review

We won’t pretend to understand how games designers come up with themes for their games. Perhaps there’s just some algorithm churning out things from Google, or they ask the craziest intern what their first thought every morning is.

In this case, Microgaming’s designers were faced with the task of making a game based on surfing chameleons. That’s right, the lizards, who are best known as survival-conscious color changes – but on surfboards!

Way out theme aside, the Crazy Chameleons slot itself is not quite so psychedelic – although the graphics and sound are certainly colorful and striking. It’s a standard 5-reel set-up, with just five pay-lines. Betting runs from 0.25 coins to 25 coins, and you should get an average theoretical return to the payer of 96.07%, which is pretty good in the current market, on a game that is rated as medium volatility.

While most games these days chuck a load of extras at players, the Crazy Chameleons are pretty chilled, nuts-and-bolts sort of guys, who are happy with a base game, wilds, scatters and not much more. Pay lines run both ways, but that’s necessary to get the total up to just 10 when most games offer many, many more than that these days.

The game design is also pretty simple. There’s not much in the way of backdrop, with the attention all falling on the reels. That’s fine, and it works well on small screens. On the reels, the designers play out the bizarre scenario of the skin-shifting lizards catching waves.

The paytable opens with the usual card trump cards, before offering a set of sea-side- and surf-themed symbols: boards, shorts, seagulls, the sun, and the chameleon himself. He’s the biggest paying symbol, with a top-line pay-out of 5,000 coins.

The wild symbol is the word “wild”, and I can’t be the only online video slots player to be as bored as all hell with this particular formulation – guys, think of something! And the game logo’s no better!

The wild doesn’t even pay as a symbol in its own right, and there are no scatters because there’s no bonus game for them to trigger. The sound is OK. It’s a washing sea-shore effect, with the usual rushing beeps for the spin and a brief blast of surf guitar for wins.

The gameplay is OK. The most involving part is setting your bets, with lines to select and coin size to set, though many players will just click the max bet to chance on all lines. The auto-play is bizarrely styled as an “expert” mode, which is a bit weird.

If you like a simple game and a simple look – and you start to win, you might well love Crazy Chameleons slot machine. It’s also possible that there’s a big market of lizard fans out there. Who knows?

These big gaming companies presumably do a load of market research and might know something that we don’t know. For us, this game felt a little lacking, but – especially on mobile – we think the only way for you to decide is to take the weird trip to the beach yourself.
