Novomatic has come up with an unusual name for its 5-reel video slot inspired by Japanese culture. Those not familiar with Japanese history might be interested to know that Katana is a curved sword, traditionally made and used by the samurai in ancient Japan. While it once served as a powerful weapon in close combat and could well decide whether one lives or dies, Novomatic’s Katana slot does a different kind of magic in the hands of a skilful online warrior. Use it well and you’ll be treated to a round of free games with an expanding Wild which can easily end the battle in your favour.
Meet the Brave Warrior at a Battlefield
Katana pays over 20 paylines but you’re welcome to play with less. However, if you’re looking to invest smaller amounts per spin, it might be better to adjust the stake by lowering the size of your line bet. While audio effects are unlikely to improve your spinning experience, one can’t but admire unusually attractive visuals executed in a style reminiscent of Japanese silk paintings. The proud samurai acts as a substitute and is at the same time your second most valuable game symbol which will pay up to 1,000x bet per line. He’ll be joined by a lovely geisha, couple of battle scenes, and icons depicting Japanese temples. Low-value wins are, as is often the case, delivered by playing card symbols, and while we’re not necessarily fans of such overused visuals, they’ve at least been beautifully designed to fit the theme.
Katana Shows the Way to Fortunes
Like many other Novomatic titles, Katana comes with a Gamble function which becomes active after each win. Players are given an opportunity to either collect the amount offered or try doubling it by guessing if the next card in line is red or black. You’ll get up to 5 attempts to boost the win, though a single wrong guess leaves you with nothing. Do note that opting to use Autoplay will make Gamble function unavailable.
Scattered Katana will pay as much as 80x your total stake, and if landing 3 or more simultaneously it launches the free games rounds. You’ll be offered to spin 10 times on the house while benefiting from the Shogun bonus. Familiar little extra comes in the form of a Wild icon which will expand over its entire reel each time stretching can result in a win. The good news is that the feature can be re-triggered and allow you to benefit from more spins without having to invest a single cent on top.
Katana is a typical Novomatic title in terms of set up and gameplay, likely to give you a deja-vu feel in case you’ve ever played Shogun slot in a land-based casino. What’s not so typical is its visual appeal which quite possibly makes it one of the best Novomatic executions ever. This is a high-variance game so you may want to prepare yourself for dry spells both mentally and with a bankroll to last until free games start.
